Ancient Forests of Michigan 

The maps below, both the paper and electronic version, are an ongoing attempt at identifying Michigan's oldest woodlands. These forests and tracts of land are either virgin (never logged) or mature/secondary forest (logged in the distant past, but have since reached maturity/old growth status).  While most of the woodlands on this map already have protections in place, so many of our special forests do not!  Changes in the way we manage, protect, and utilize our woodlands is of the upmost importance.
